Five Countries, One Crew: Why This AmaWaterways Rhine Cruise Might Be the Best Trip I've Ever Planned
By Gina Langlinais | Magical Moments Vacations
I have planned a lot of trips. Family reunions, Disney caravan convoys, destination weddings, ocean cruises, river cruises through Hungary and the Czech Republic. But when I sat down and really looked at what this itinerary offers โ and what we're getting as a group โ I genuinely got a little emotional. Because this one is different.
Let me tell you about Five Countries, One Crew.
The Trip That Started With a Contract and Ended With a Mission
When my AmaWaterways group contract came through for the Swiss Alps & Rhine Castles sailing aboard the AmaSerena, I almost missed the most important line on page two.
Free land package.
FREE. Milan and Lake Como โ four nights in Italy before the cruise even starts โ included for our group at no additional charge. That's a $2,360 per couple value, just for booking together.
I called my contact at AmaWaterways to confirm I was reading it right. I was. And that's when this trip went from "great group sailing" to "the trip I have been waiting to put together."
Here's How the Journey Unfolds
This is a 12-day experience that moves through five countries and honestly feels like five completely different vacations stitched together into one perfect journey.
๐ฎ๐น Milan, Italy โ June 18โ20 (2 nights)
We start in Milan, and before you say "I've heard Milan is just a layover city" โ stop right there. Milan done right is extraordinary. The Duomo di Milano alone is worth the flight over. We're talking Gothic architecture that took nearly 600 years to complete, a rooftop terrace with views across the city, and a piazza that buzzes with energy at every hour of the day.
Then there's the food. Risotto alla Milanese. Fresh pasta. Aperol spritzes in the late afternoon sun. Milan is the kind of city that gets into your bones if you let it.
๐ Lake Como, Italy โ June 20โ22 (2 nights)
From Milan we head north to Lake Como, and this is where I lose people in the best possible way. The moment you see that lake โ the deep blue water, the mountains rising straight out of it, the little villages clinging to the hillsides โ you understand why the world's most discerning travelers have been coming here for centuries.
We're here in late June, which means long golden evenings, warm temperatures, and the kind of light that makes every photo look like it was taken by a professional. Whether you want to take a ferry between villages, sit at a lakeside cafรฉ and do absolutely nothing, or explore the grand villas and gardens along the shore โ Lake Como delivers.
๐ณ Board the AmaSerena in Basel, Switzerland โ June 22
After four nights in Italy, we transfer to Basel, Switzerland and board the AmaSerena โ our home for the next seven nights. Basel is a city worth a few hours of exploration in its own right: a medieval old town, a striking stone bridge over the Rhine, and the Mรผnster Cathedral watching over it all from above.
Then we set sail.
โต The Rhine โ June 22โ29
This is where the river cruise magic kicks in. The AmaSerena sails through some of the most scenic waterway in the world, and every day brings a new port, a new landscape, a new story.
Strasbourg, France โ One of my favorite cities in all of Europe. La Petite France, the medieval quarter, looks like something out of a fairy tale: half-timbered houses with flower boxes overflowing, canals reflecting the buildings, people spilling out of restaurants onto cobblestone streets. It's France meets Germany in the most charming way imaginable.
Rรผdesheim, Germany โ This is wine country. Rรผdesheim sits at the edge of the Rhine Gorge, surrounded by steep hillside vineyards producing some of Germany's finest Rieslings. You can hike up through the vines with the river glittering below, or stroll the famous Drosselgasse alley lined with taverns and music. It's festive and fun and deeply, authentically German.
The Rhine Gorge & Castles โ This is the stretch I tell everyone to get up on deck for. For miles, the Rhine winds through a dramatic gorge with forested cliffs rising on both sides โ and perched on those cliffs are over 40 medieval castles. Forty. You literally cannot look in any direction without seeing a tower or a ruin or a fortress. The iconic Burgkatze Castle sits right above a cluster of colorful riverside houses like a scene from a storybook. If you love history, this is your moment.
Cologne, Germany โ The Cologne Cathedral is one of the most breathtaking Gothic structures in the world, and sailing into Cologne with that skyline in view is something you don't forget. We'll have time to explore the old town, grab a local Kรถlsch beer, and stand inside a cathedral that took over 600 years to build.
๐ท Amsterdam, Netherlands โ June 29
We disembark in Amsterdam on June 29 โ and if you've never been, let me just say: stay an extra day or two if you can. The canal houses, the museums, the flower markets, the bikes weaving through it all โ Amsterdam rewards slow wandering. An optional 2-night post-cruise package is available if you want to linger.
What's Included (And It's A Lot)
One of the things I love most about AmaWaterways is how genuinely all-inclusive the experience is. Once you're on board the AmaSerena, here's what's covered:
All onboard meals โ breakfast, lunch, and dinner, every day
Unlimited house wine, beer, and soft drinks with lunch and dinner
Guided shore excursions at every port
Onboard lectures, entertainment, and enrichment programming
Wi-Fi throughout the ship
Gratuities for onboard crew (for balcony stateroom guests through our Upgrade Rewards promotion)
You board the ship, unpack once, and let Europe come to you.
The Pricing Breakdown
Cruise fares are per person based on double occupancy, and here's the full range:
Category
Per Person
Cat. E
$4,399
Cat. D
$4,449
Cat. C โ Sweet Spot
$5,998
Cat. BB
$6,598
Cat. AB
$6,998
Cat. AA
$7,198
Suite SS
$8,598
Port charges are an additional $280 per person.
My honest recommendation is Category C. It's the sweet spot โ a beautiful balcony stateroom that gives you that private outdoor space to watch the Rhine Gorge castles float past, at a price point that makes the whole trip feel like an extraordinary value.
A $400 per person deposit holds your cabin, and final payment isn't due until February 24, 2027 โ so you have plenty of time to plan.
The Free Land Package โ Let Me Say It One More Time
Because I cannot stress this enough: the 2-night Milan + 2-night Lake Como pre-cruise package is FREE for our group.
If you booked this trip independently, that Italy extension would cost you $2,360 per couple. As part of Five Countries, One Crew, it's included. This is a capacity-controlled offer โ meaning there are only so many spots โ and once they're gone, they're gone.
A Note on Entry Requirements for 2027
No visa is required for U.S. citizens traveling to Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany, or the Netherlands. However, ETIAS โ the EU's new electronic travel authorization โ is expected to be in place by our June 2027 departure date. It's not a visa. It's a simple online application that takes about 10 minutes and costs approximately $23 per person, similar to the ESTA that international visitors use to enter the U.S. I'll walk every traveler through it when the time comes.
Your passport needs to be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area โ so at minimum through late September 2027. Check yours now and renew early if needed, as passport processing times can run long.
Why I'm Going Too
I want to be transparent about something: I'm taking this trip myself.
Lloyd and I will be there for all of it โ the risotto in Milan, the ferry rides on Lake Como, watching the castles from the sun deck as we sail through the Rhine Gorge. I don't just sell travel. I live it, I research it firsthand, and I bring that experience back to every client I work with.
When I plan a group trip, I'm not just filling a contract. I'm building something โ a shared experience for people who want more than a highlight reel. That's what Five Countries, One Crew is.
